Plan

Welcome to the first phase of the PDSA Cycle!

To begin the continuous improvement process you will need to first plan your course of action. Use the documents to plan your work. You will want to state what you are doing, make predictions about what will happen and why, and answer the who, what, where, and when. A good plan will help you and others do your work!

Once you have planned your work you are ready to move on to the Do phase of the PDSA Cycle.

Do

Congratulations, you made a plan! Now it is time to put your plan in place.

Use the documents to record your actions and any observations. Be as detailed as possible.

The Do phase provides documents to help you track and monitor your work.

Once you have completed your work, it is time to Study the results!

Study

How did it go?

Once you have done your work, it is time to analyze your data and see what is different.

Use the documents to help you with your data analysis, compare what you thought would happen with what did happen, and summarize what you learned.

Once you have analyzed your data and know what is different, you are ready to Act.

Act

Once you have studied your work, it is time to act!

Use the documents to help you figure out if you should

[simple_tooltip content=’Abandon if the outcomes were worse or if unintended negative outcomes outweigh your improvement

Adopt if you are satisfied with the improvement of your PDSA Cyclce

Adapt if you saw some bright spots and want to continue to improve your work.’]adopt the work, abandon the work, or adapt the work[/simple_tooltip]

moving forward.

Once you have determined whether to abandon, adopt or adapt, you are ready to start your next PDSA Cycle.
